John Young is a BBC TV presenter and reporter who has distilled the energy of a working TV newsroom into a range of edge-of-the-seat keynotes and agility workshops, delivered online or in person.
They reveal in jaw-dropping detail how seat-of-the-pants TV News production can be. But John doesn’t just bask in the audience’s fascination. He then makes it relevant, with key business messages about pivoting skills, crystal clear communication, time management, leadership and courage. They are his own product, not the BBC’s, but are based on more than 30 years on-
going experience in the front line of daily news reporting at the corporation.
They are also a fascinating insight into how the media works — without being ‘media training’ — and are a lot of fun. And in an age of Zoom and Teams Meetings, they give a great insight into how to work most effectively whilst communicating down the lens of a laptop — after all, as he says, “we’re all broadcasters now.”
His clients include EasyJet, American Express, Gatwick Airport, the international CEO network Vistage, the English Rugby Football Union and Brighton & Hove City Council — he has also delivered his workshops and talks as a Guest Speaker to passengers on board Cunard’s flagship, the Queen Mary 2. He is a senior member of the Professional Speaking Association.
John joined the BBC from Cambridge University as one of 12 news trainees in 1989. This provided him with two years’ training in BBC editorial standards, before choosing his own path as a reporter and presenter in Southampton, Belfast, Truro, Newcastle, Bristol, Brighton and on the BBC’s News Channel.
In 2009, John was selected for a year’s secondment as a Trainer of incoming journalists at the BBC Academy. In 2013, he set up his business, John Young Media, and continues to work on air two days a week for BBC South East and, when required, the BBC News Channel. John uses income from his professional clients to subsidise employability skills workshops for school pupils and young people who are not in formal education or training.
